Welcome to ME!
This week, I didn't get a chance to do all that much work done on my dissertation, mostly because I was fooling around with other stuff for the student organization I'm president of this year (like trying to get a VP, and get my name on the bank account so that I can book a space in the local park for a picnic, both of which have been more difficult that they should have been). Well, that, and my job, which is very nice to have, but a bit of a pain. There are several office/personnel reasons for that, but the ones that I will share on this are that it's 4 hours solid of work (which I'm not used to), and those 4 hours must take place in the afternoon, which both cuts up my day and takes away nap time. I'm finding it inconvenient at the moment because just as I get working on something, it's time to head into campus (which, with the arrival of the 35,000 undergrads has become VERY busy).
BUT, on Monday and Wednesday, I did get a chance to go to the library and work on some of the images I scanned from microfilm over the summer. I've finally hit the point where I started editing them as I went, so I should just have a bit more to do before burning the rest to disk. So, the promise of a more productive week for next week.
Today, my goal is to figure out what format I want to use for the rest of the personnel data I have. I find Access very difficult to use (probably because I only partially know what I'm doing; I know just enough to give myself fequent heart attacks when I hit the wrong button and seem to loose all of my 987 records), but I'm not convinced that any other program, like Excel, would be better. I've already started entering stuff in Access, so I'll probably go that way.
This weeks quote from my notes:
“PEOPLE
All people are made alike
They are made of bones, flesh and dinners.
Only the dinners are different.

Have you tried FileMaker? I also had a hard time with Access and decided to try FileMaker (then 7.0, now it´s 8.5) and was amazed by how easy it was to create a database. Using a template and an intro to Filemaker book, I had my research database up and running within half an hour ;)
